Oh how I wish I had known about Pregnancy Massage when I was pregnant with either of my children. the constant pain, stiffness and soreness associated with your body creating another human being and the accommodations that body has to do to itself in order to achieve this miracle- can be mind numbing.
But it does not have to be! some women experience sciatica during their pregnancy as their tissues, ligaments and pelvis MOVE (yes it actually does move) throughout the last two trimesters. This movement can impinge the sciatic never that runs from the spine and down each leg.
This manifests as pain (common), tingling, and numbness (less often). Massage has been shown to help alleviate most if not all of these symptoms. The massage itself is relaxing and should never make you feel like you hurt worse. sometimes all it takes is a gentle pressure into the side of the glutes (butt muscles) and some rocking to get those muscles to ‘let go’.
Pregnancy massage at Serenity Massage & Energywork is preformed side lying. While there are tables out there that have a ‘pregnancy feature’ that allows pregnant women to lie face down, there have been some studies that indicate that this positioning endangers the mom and perhaps the pregnancy itself because it puts too much stress on those critical ligaments in the low and hips. So side lying it is. This is non-negotiable the 1st trimester.
Gentle to firm pressure is used throughout the session help muscles release and to foster a sense of peace and relaxation. If the woman is not high risk, some essential oils can be used during pregnancy- but not all. Lavender is safe to use and has been shown clinically to induce a state of relaxation to the central nervous system i.e. helps you feel AHHHHHH
Once the muscles are relaxed, they no longer are ‘pinching’ the nerves and causing pain tingling etc. sometimes the effects of the massage can last a long time, sometimes a client has to come in weekly in order to function. It all depends on the woman , what her life is like (level of stress etc) what her pain levels are like and her budget.
See you soon.
